Literacy India a non-profit organization started its journey in 1996 with the objective of empowering underprivileged children and women and making them self-sufficient. We have endeavored to meet this objective through imparting education and developing  a platform for the underprivileged children to achieve a variety of skills in performing arts, science, technology and vocation, giving the children basic human values, dignity of labour, self belief and dreams with an ultimate goal of enabling them to support themselves and hopefully, their families.

Literacy India has in the last one decade touched the lives of 10,000 beneficiaries through various programs across seven villages in and around Gurgaon, in the state of Haryana. They have created an environment where these individuals are encouraged to develop their own personality and develop into confident individuals.

At Literacy India we identify the age of each individual and check his prior academic history and then judging their aptitude we bring them under the umbrella of one of our projects.

We have a step by step program where we start with personal grooming and then ensure their personal hygiene and cleanliness and a regular nutritious snack, we also provide meals three days a week for enhanced productivity and confidence. Children are also given uniforms, books and a school bag to  take back home.

Frequent visits by eminent personalities in the school are a source of inspiration to the students. The presence of Indraani Singh, Asia's first woman Jet Commander, and Literacy India’s founder member, provides the perfect role model – especially for girl students.

Singh in her uniform is an inspiration for the children – if she can fly, why they can’t ……….. And thus DREAMS begin to turn into REALITY.

Keeping in view the rising problems of population and unemployment, the root cause for which is illiteracy and ignorance, Literacy India has taken  on the task of creating awareness on the importance of education for the under privileged children and youth.

The programs are envisaged to be innovative, sustainable, and replicable in different parts of the country. Our primary objectives are to: -

  • Identify girl children from under privileged backgrounds and help build their confidence and awareness.
  • To support children in active schooling to provide minimum levels of learning.
  • To use role models to inspire the youth to take up issues concerning their communities.
  • Provide women and children with vocational skills.
  • Our Focus is also to economically empower women from Rural & slum areas.
  • To nurture, mentor and assist children to become human resource assets in the community and to restore dignity amongst the underprivileged.

Literacy India is doing pioneering work experimenting with a totally new educational model. This has been developed from a vision that underprivileged children should be provided an opportunity and a platform to equip

themselves with basic education and also to nurture and develop their latent talents and skills in order to realize their maximum potential.

Emphasis is on providing education not as in typical classroom, but to give a child a wider canvas of exposure in a socio-cultural environment.

It is important that education is imparted in an environment, which focuses on instilling dignity of labor.

With its new model, Literacy India has made a major breakthrough is the last 12 years. It has created an environment where the children are encouraged to develop their own personality. This is achieved through making education a fun activity and involves workshops on group learning methods, drama, dance, creative arts and other non-traditional methods of learning.

Eminent personalities from different walks of life come and interact with the children and the inspiration gleaned from these visits does impact the children's enthusiasm. The interest generated in such activities also enables identification of talent, which can eventually have potential for earnings and thereby ensure graduating to higher education or vocational training.
