Project Karigiri was established to provide a platform for vocational training to those students who showed a lack of interest in formal studies or dropouts from school. The age group being targeted was 16+.

The basic facility was started in the premises of Vidyapeeth which now houses a separate room for training in tailoring craft. Facilities at site for tailoring are now quite adequate to provide training to 6-8 students at a time.

VOCATIONS

Upto last year i.e 2001-02 Project Karigiri was restricted to mainly tailoring classes. From the current year we have added Motor Mechanic and Driving. This is being, implemented by attaching the interested candidates with a motor garage and driving schools in Palam Vihar area close to their homes Literacy India bears the cost of the lessons in the Driving School and stipends for the Motor Mechanic since they do not get any amount from the garage.

STRATEGY
  • Identify a trainer to impart the basics.
  • Provide raw materials for practice.
  • Create a program whereby the students will make certain standardized items such as tablecloths, cushion covers etc. Most of these girls/ladies belong to economically weaker section and after they complete the tailoring course, it is assumed that they will be able to add something to the family earnings.
  • Take the students through practical tests after training to ensure that they have learnt the skills.
  • Marketed the products and pass the proceeds on to the students to give them the confidence on their skill.
  • Assist deserving students in procuring a sewing machine at their home and provide them work for our standard items.
  • Provide assistance for placements.
OUTPUT
  • From the previous batch we successfully placed two trainees in a Garment export house and after an initial 3 month training they were found satisfactory and absorbed at a salary of Rs 3500 pm.
  • Two youths undergoing training as Motor Mechanics have worked very hard and are planned to be inducted in the garages where they received their training at Rs. 2000 pm.
  • We are helping the boys who passed out under the Driving training and very soon they will be earning about Rs. 2500 pm.
  • During the year 10 persons have directly benefited from the Karigari Project. We hope to enlarge the scope so that many more can benefit from this program.

Above success is to viewed form the perspective that these students had no inclinations for doing any work at all prior to their enrollment in Project Karigiri and now they are contributing to the family earnings.

Tailoring classes for twenty three girls/ladies of Daultabad village located near Gurgaon, Haryana was started on 1st September 2003. The tailoring classes are being conducted till date. More than 200 women have already been trained.
