A paradigm shift in education model
Literacy India is doing pioneering work in experimenting with a totally new educational model. This has been developed from a vision that underprivileged children should be provided an opportunity and a platform to equip themselves with basic education and also to nurture and develop their latent talents and skills in order to realize their maximum potential The major handicap invariably is financial incapacity and traditional attitudes in weaker sections of society which place education of children low on priority. In striving towards its aims Literacy India is focusing on bringing about a Qualitative change in the lives underprivileged children by giving a different meaning to education. Educations not as in typical classroom but to give a child a wider canvas of exposure in a in a socio-cultural environment. It is important that education is imparted is an environment which focuses on instilling dignity of labor.India has a wealth of educated but unemployed youths but who shun the potential of earning a living only because of a mental divide that prevents them from working. This is a national loss and it is an important issue that needs to be addressed. Providing just basic education is not sufficient in bringing about a change but only the first step and unless an ongoing program for overall development in not initiated the child and family are not sufficiently motivated to continue their education. It is with this new model that literacy India has made a major breakthrough is the last 9 years. It has created an environment where the children are encouraged to develop their own personality. This is achieved through making education a fun activity and involves workshops on group learning methods, drama, dance, creative arts and other non-traditional methods of learning. Eminent personalities from different walks of life come and interact with the children and the inspiration gleaned from these visits does impact the children's enthusiasm. The interest generated in such activities also enables identification of talent that can eventually have potential for earnings and thereby ensure graduating to higher education or vocational training.
