She is a 22-year-old girl born to a poor family in Haryana. She lost her father at a very young age. Sushma's mother managed to bring up her two children with great difficulty by selling milk. Sushma and her sister Manju used to watch the daily struggle their mother was going through and to help her earn a decent living they joined Literacy India for a six month computer course. Once they finished the course they decided to learn driving much against the wishes of their family. Fortunately Literacy India was able to enroll them for a driving course from IDTR Ghaziabad; a division of Maruti Udyog Ltd.Sushma was one of the best amongst her batch of ten and was offered a job in Maruti as a driver. During her training period she overcame many hindrances and resentment from her family and villagers. She was the only lady car parking driver amongst 250 .drivers of Maruti Udyog Ltd. Her male colleagues attempted to discourage her in the job insisting that this was not a job suitable for girls. Sushma overcame all odds and emerged as a superior performer in this male bastion.
Maruti openly acknowledged her performance to be superior to the more experienced male drivers. Today on seeing her achievements she has not only made her family and friends feel proud but also is an inspiration for other girls of her village to follow. On recognizing her skills and motivation, Maruti appointed Sushma as Senior Instructor when Maruti launched the concept of driving schools attached with prominent dealers. Her success is a pointer that with grit and determination nothing is impossible. She is now a constant source of encouragement and inspiration to a new batch of girls who have enrolled for driving training.
