Literacy India was set up in 1996 as a non-profit organization, with the objective of empowering underprivileged children and women by making them self-sufficient.
Literacy India has clearly set the three E’s as its goal on a process of achieving in next decade i.e., Education, Empowerment and Employment.

The programs are envisaged to be innovative, sustainable and replicable in different parts of the country. Our primary objectives are to: -
• Identify young girls from under privileged backgrounds and help build their confidence and awareness
• To support children in active schooling to provide minimum levels of learning.
• To use role models to inspire the youth to take up issues concerning their communities.
• Provide women and children with vocational skills.
• Our focus is also to economically empower women from rural & slum areas.
• To nurture, mentor and assist children to become human resource assets in the community and to restore dignity amongst the underprivileged.

Literacy India is doing pioneering work experimenting with a totally new educational model. This has been developed from a vision that underprivileged children should be provided an opportunity and a platform to equip them with basic education and also to nurture and develop their latent talents and skills in order to realize their maximum potential.
Emphasis is on providing education not in the typical classroom manner, but to give a child a wider canvas of exposure in a socio-cultural environment.
It is important that education is imparted in an environment, which focuses on instilling dignity of labor. With its new model, Literacy India has made a major breakthrough in the last 12 years. It has created an environment where the children are encouraged to develop their own personality. This is achieved through making education a fun activity and involves workshops on group learning methods, drama, dance, creative arts and other non-traditional methods of learning. Eminent personalities from different walks of life come and interact with the children and the inspiration gleaned from these visits does impact the children's enthusiasm. The interest generated in such activities also enables identification of talent, which can eventually have potential for earnings and thereby ensure graduating to higher education or vocational training.
